What are the Challenges of Digital India Campaign?
The government of India under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi has taken a great initiative to bring about the digital revolution in India. On July 1, 2015, our honourable PM inaugurated the “Digital India Campaign” to make the dream of making each citizen digitally empowered a reality.
Though it has many advantages and if it is implemented effectively it can bring great development. Yet it needs to overcome many challenges to match with the exact vision of the PM.
Digital India Campaign
Initially, the main focus was to introduce digitization in government affairs and bring out new concept e-governance under National e-Governance Plan (NeGP). The main objective behind the Digital India Campaign is to empower each citizen of India and avail the services, which provide more convenient ways to interact with the government. The vision of this great initiative is not just to boost economic growth but also to improve the living standard of the citizens.
Let’s go through the challenges the government is facing to transform the dream of digital India into reality.
The challenges involved in fulfilling of Digital India:
In the history of Indian politics, no government has taken such a great initiative. It is a large-scale transformation and it needs huge efforts to implement it practically. Due to the lack of equipment, skilled human resources, this campaign is going through many challenges for its execution.
Hence, the vision cannot be turned to reality successfully without tackling such challenges.
1. Setup of NOFN Infrastructure
Under the NOFN Program, the government made an effort to connect about 250,000 villages through an optical fibre network. Out of which only 1% of those villages are connected to the internet through NOFN. The reason behind this challenge is that last-mile connectivity is unaffordable for most Indians.
So, to overcome these problems, the government needs to take effective measures against it.
2. Adoption of Internet
The adoption of new technology i.e the internet by most of the people in remote places still remains a matter of concern. India comes under third world country and the greater part of its population is below the poverty line. So, the reach of broadband and Smartphone are limited to only 15% population and poor areas would find it difficult to afford the INTERNET through broadband.
Moreover, Low literacy level, lack of content with regional relevance, lack of appropriate access devices are also some of the reasons.
3. Data Speed
Data speed is another most crucial challenge, where India faces a big hurdle to implementing digitalization. The average internet speed in India is 0.099 Mbps, which ranks 20th in mobile data speeds in the world. However, the top-ranked nation Canada has an average data speed of over 4.5 Mbps.
With the rise in a number of Cybercrime cases, the vision to put the information of more than billion citizens online seems quite risky. To minimize these problems, the highest levels of security measures and protocols should be taken against it.
5. Coordination and Standardization
Many government departments such as DeitY, DoT, Law, Finance, etc. will join hands to create systems and operational standards for a boundless integration. This type of involvement requires well- organized coordination to ensure proper flow of information.
6. Private Sector Participation
To meet the expected timeliness, the participation of the private sector plays a vital role. However, private sector shown limited involvement, this need to be encouraged to overcome this challenge.
The unavailability of skilled man powers is one of the most crucial and biggest challenges, which creating hurdle. More than 475 million people engaged in labour, out of which 93% are unorganized labour. For the effective implementation of new technologies, the whole nation urges for the need for skilled workers.
Last but not least, the campaign for this level has never been successful in the past, so it is also a matter of concern. The success of this scheme is only possible if the government put all possible efforts to transform its vision into reality for every citizen.
